Training in CPR and ECC at UGMC

The Medical Simulation and Training Centre of the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC)   in collaboration with Emergency and Critical Care Network, Health Solutions International Inc. and Africa Resuscitation Initiative conducted a training programme on Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) from 18th to 20th September 2019.

The training which was on basic and advanced life support for adults, children and babies was conducted for about four hundred (400) health professionals and some non-health professionals  in selected public health  facilities in Ghana.  Some of the participating health institutions whose staff benefitted from the training were the UGMC, the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and the University of Ghana Dental Association.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is a lifesaving technique useful in many emergencies, including heart attacks or in situations where a person’s breathing ceases or heart stops beating. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends that everyone, whether untrained bystanders or medical personnel, start CPR as soon as possible before calling for further help from the experts.

The three-day training, the first in a series to be conducted periodically at UGMC, was held at the Centre’s ultra-modern Medical Training and Simulation Centre and was based on the AHA curriculum whist the certification was by AHA instructors.
